The Peixoto family has been in the coffee industry, mostly as sharecroppers, for generations. They are among the very few Black Brazilians who own land in the Campo das Vertentes region in the south of Minas Gerais. By banding together in 1998, the Peixotos were able to purchase 44 hectares of land and plant 27,000 coffee trees. Now, that land includes a drying patio, farmhouse, and storage facility, and over 74,000 coffee trees grow on the property.

We have Sebastiao Peixoto and his entire family to thank for the incredible coffee coming to us from southern Minas Gerais. Today, Sebastiao and his son Lucas are working hard with their extended family to bring sustainable coffee to market.  In Sebastiao's words: I want to leave a legacy of sustainability, quality and innovation to future generations. Agriculture is not just a business - it is a way of life. And we are so grateful for the work that the Peixotos are doing as Black Brazilian producers.

We are honored to have Sebastiao's Yellow Catucai microlot in Detroit! The 2024 harvest produced a cup profile full of yellow stone fruits(golden raisin, gooseberry), marzipan and caramel. The perfect coffee to lead us into spring.
